How Bloggers Make Money Online

The most common way bloggers seem to make money online is via Google AdSense and most of them even make the mistake of just depending on it alone.

Inorder to make money online as a blogger you should not depend on just AdSense or any one revenue source alone. The trick to make more money from your blog is to add more revenue sources.

To make it easier for you, I have listed the common Ad programs that bloggers are currently using to make money through blogs.

  • AdSense: AdSense is a contextual advertising program for which publishers simply have to add a piece of code to their sites that helps Google analyze what your page is about so they can serve Ads on that topic. AdSense also allows you to earn money by using Google Search on your site that will display relevant Ads when visitors search on your site. AdSense also has a referral program that allows you to earn by recommending various products like Firefox toolbar, AdSense, Adwords, etc.
  • Text Link Ads: Text Link Ads will help you sell simple text links on your site easily. The monthly link price will depend on factors like your Google Pagerank and Alexa rank. As a new Advertiser on Text Link Ads you are eligible for $100 in FREE Links.Text Link Ads has an affiliate program that will pay you $25 for any referred visitor that is accepted into their publisher program and installs the advertising script on their site for seven days. If you refer an advertiser who purchases an advertisement, the referral will appear in your affiliate account within 24 hours.

For more info, read my Text Link Ads Review and my post on how to make money online with Text Link Ads.

  • Tribal Fusion: Tribal Fusion’s payment is calculated based on ad impressions (CPM). So the higher your web site traffic is the more money you will earn. To get accepted though you will need a minimum of 2000 unique visitors per day.
  • Kontera: Kontera’s ContentLink is a double underlined contextually relevant keyword on a web page that upon mouse-over opens a small bubble like box that displays and links to an ad from one of Kontera’s advertisers. When a visitor clicks the in text advertisement, they will be taken to the advertiser’s web site and the publisher will make money online. With ContentLink, advertisers reach their targeted audience on a Cost Per Click (CPC) basis.ContentLink requires your site to have a minimum of 500,000 pageview per month, but I have seen them accepting new sites with lower pageviews.
  • Vizu Answers: Vizu Answers helps you earn money from your site by placing interactive Polls on desired topics. They pay you based on CPM (Cost per thousand impressions), and you even get to set the minimum CPM rate for each poll you put up on your web site.
  • ReviewMe: Pays you to review products and services on your site. You control what you review.
  • Chitika eMiniMalls: Chitika eMiniMalls is a cost per click advertising program that will perform particularly well for product related blogs.
  • Intellitxt: This is an in-text advertising program just like Kontera, but is harder to get accepted into.
  • FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN): FAN adds CPM ads to your feed. You may need around 500 RSS readers to get accepted.
  • BlogAds - BlogAds lets you set the price and helps you find advertisers for your blog easily. To perform better with BlogAds, place it at a more prominent position on your blog.

You can also make money with direct ad sales and through Affiliate programs like Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction (I have not tried these affiliate programs, but know that a few bloggers use them). Text Link Ads, ReviewMe and Aaron’s SEO book also offer affiliate programs that many bloggers use.

There are many more affiliate programs, you have to choose the one that matches your blog. Check here for tips on how to improve your Affiliate earnings.

Guest blogging on other blogs seems to be a new way of making money for bloggers these days, but some bloggers guest blog just for a link back.

I hope this post makes bloggers realize that they should not depend on just Google AdSense. May be in the beginning stage of a blog AdSense will do enough, but as your blog grows you should keep adding more revenue sources if you really want to earn from your blog. But also keep in mind that overloading your blog with Ads can make you lose readers.

To find more ways to make money online, check my <" title="Make Money Online">make money online page (this list will be updated often) and make money online category (this is where you can find more tips to make money online).

Let me know if you want to add any more common Ad programs (used by bloggers) to the list. I know there are a lot of ad programs that allow bloggers to make money online, but I just want to mention the most common ones used by bloggers to prevent confusion for new bloggers looking for ways to make more money with their blogs.

How To Increase Alexa Rank

Alexa Rank is measured by the level of traffic your web site receives from the number of people who visit with the Alexa toolbar installed. It is important for you to increase your Alexa rank because advertisers and advertising services like Text Link Ads and ReviewMe use your site’s Alexa rank as a way to determine the worth of a link on your web site.

You can sell links on your site at a high price if you have a high Alexa Rank, so it is important to increase your Alexa Rank.

Dosh Dosh has suggested 20 quick ways to increase Alexa Ranking, out of which I tried only two and my Alexa Rank has already improved!

Around June last year I placed the Alexa Traffic Rank Button on this site and my Alexa Rank continually increased from around 90,000 to 20,000 until I removed the Alexa Traffic Rank Button after a redesign.

Only recently I noticed that my Alexa rank was decreasing slowly (around 26,000) and I decided to try out some of the tips suggested on Dosh Dosh.

I just tried two out of the 20 tips provided and my Alexa Rank has improved slowly from around 26,000 to 25,576 in about 2 weeks.

uTorrent was very slow for me until recently I applied a few tweaks. Here’s what I did.

Note: Some of the settings mentioned below are optimized for 256k connection. If you want to calculate the optimal settings for your connection, check at the end of this tutorial. But I suggest you to read the entire tutorial for guidance on other settings.

First go to Options>Preferences>Network

  1. Under ‘Port used for incomming connections’, enter any port number. It is best to use a port number above 10000. I use 45682.
  2. Randomize port each time utorrent starts: UNCHECKED. I leave this unchecked because I have a router. If you do not have a router or a firewall, and want extra security, check this option.
  3. Enable UPnP port mapping (Windows Xp or later only): UNCHECKED. I leave this unchecked because I have experienced it slowing down speeds. It is not needed if you manually port forward.
  4. Add utorrent to Windows Firewall exceptions (Windows XP SP2 or later only): UNCHECKED (do this only if you have windows firewall disabled)
  5. Global Maximum upload rate (kb/s): [0: unlimited]: 22 (for 256k connection)
  6. Protocol Encryption: ENABLED. I would recommend everyone to enable this. This can help increase speeds with many ISPs.
  7. Allow incoming Legacy Connections: CHECKED
Network Settings

Options>Preferences>Torrents

  1. Global Maximum Number of Connections: 130 (for 256k connection)This number should not be set too low or the number of connections made to your torrents will be limited. Setting it too high may cause too much bandwidth to be used and can cause slowdowns.
  2. Maximum Number of connected peers per torrent: 70 (for 256k connection)If you see that the peers connected to a specific torrent are exactly this number, or very close, increase this number to improve speeds.
  3. Number of upload slots per torrent: 3 (for 256k connection)This depends on how much you want to upload to other users. Do not set too low or it may affect download speeds.
  4. Use additional upload slots if upload speed <90%: CHECKED
  5. Maximum number of active torrents: 2 (for 256k connection)
  6. Maximum number of active downloads: 1 (for 256k connection)
  7. Enable DHT Network: CHECKEDThis is recommended to be checked to improve speeds. More people will be available for sharing if this is checked.
  8. Enable DHT for new torrents: CHECKED
  9. Enable Peer Exchange: CHECKED
  10. Enable scrapping: CHECKED
  11. Pre-allocate all files: CHECKED
  12. Append .!ut to incomplete files: UNCHECKED
Torrent Settings

Options>Preferences>Advanced

net.max_halfopen: 50

If you use Windows XP SP2, patch tcpip.sys with LvlLord’s Event ID 4226 Patcher to get better performance.

DO NOT CHANGE THIS OPTION unless you have Windows XP SP2 and have patched tcpip.sys.

You can also patch tcpip.sys with xp-Antispy

If you have a firewall

  • Open up the options/preferences/settings for the firewall - usually your firewall will have an icon to click in the taskbar
  • Look for the keywords “allow list” or “programs”
  • Add the application you want to give access to the internet
  • Make sure to save your settings when you are done

If you have a router

  1. Go to start>run>type cmd, press enter>type ipconfig, press enter
  2. Remember both your ip address and your default gateway
  3. Type in your default gateway into your default browser, a password prompt may come up. The default username and password are admin for my router
  4. Under ‘Applications’ fill out one line for each p2p client you use
  5. You need to use your ip address, the correct port range and set either tcp or udp
  6. You can find and change the ports in the actual p2p client’s settings, just make sure they are the same in the router
  7. Most p2p apps need both tcp and udp checked, if you are not sure check your p2p client’s FAQ
  8. Save your settings

:!: Check PortForward.com to forward ports for uTorrent.

Some of the settings I mentioned above are relative to my bandwidth.

How to calculate optimal settings for your connection

In order to apply the following tips you need to know your maximum upload and download speeds. You can test your bandwidth over here.

Maximum upload speed

If you use your Maximum upload speed, there won’t be not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed.

This is how I calculate my optimal upload speed…

upload speed * 80%

Maximum download speed

Setting your maximum download speed to unlimited will hurt your connection. So use this to calculate your optimal setting.

download speed * 90%

Maximum connected peers per torrent

upload speed * 1.3

Maximum upload slots

1 + (upload speed / 6)

Disable Windows Firewall

Windows Firewall hates P2P and so disable it and get yourself a decent firewall like Zone Alarm.

And last optimize your Internet connection with TCP Optimizer.

Outlook Web Access to Microsoft Exchange Server

Outlook Web Access (OWA) allows any client with a compatible browser to access Exchange Server folders.

The "premium" version of OWA in Exchange 2003 looks and acts much like the Outlook 2003 desktop client, although it does not offer support for the Journal folder. The "basic" version looks more like previous versions. You may want to try both and see which is faster for the conditions your users are likely to encounter. Microsoft Exchange Server Introduction to Exchange Server 2003 has a good chart comparing the feature sets.

For Exchange 2000, you create applications using web forms. No conversion tool is available to turn Outlook forms into Exchange 2000 OWA forms. For resources and tools, see Microsoft Exchange Server Development Technologies. With Outlook 2002 and Exchange 2000, you can connect using OWA and Outlook 2002's support for HTTP mail servers (at least those that use WebDAV). The correct URL would be http://servername.domain.com/exchange/mailboxname.

There are issues using OWA on Vista because the dhtml text editor control used by OWA is not supported in Vista. The Exchange administrator should have installed the security patch for this on the Exchange server months ago, but many have not. The patch will fix this and a similar issue that affects Windows XP users who've installed the security patch described in MS06-013. The hotfix installs a new editor for Internet Explorer which uses an iframe instead of an ActiveX control.

If you are an end-user, contact your administrator. If you are an administrator, see the following links for more information and the hotfix.

You receive an error message when you try to perform any editing tasks, or you must click to enable the compose frame in Outlook Web Access http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/911829.

Managing Exchange Server Permissions

Viewing Permissions

If you don't see permissions on objects in the Exchange Administrator program (4.0 - 5.5), choose Tools | Options, switch to the Permissions tab, then check the box for Show Permissions pages for all objects.

Folder Permissions

In Exchange 5.5 and earlier, existing folders do not automatically propagate permission changes to child folders. However, new folders do inherit permissions from their parents. Also, using the Exchange Administrator program, you can propagate settings to child folders.

If you are not the administrator and need to manage folder permissions, ask the administrator to set up some distribution lists that you can use for setting permissions on the folders. You will need to have permission to edit the DL. Then, when someone new needs to be added, you'll just change the DL -- adding and removing members through Outlook -- not the permissions on each folder.

  • User Reply Address

    Several scenarios:
  • You want a user to be able to reply to messages sent to a public folder with the folder's address.
  • You want a user to be able to reply with another mailbox's address -- without the user's own address appearing anywhere on the reply.
  • You want to be able to send using the return address of a distribution list in the Global Address List (GAL).
  • The solution is the same in all cases: You must grant Send As permission on the folder or mailbox using the Exchange Administrator program or Active Directory. Send As is granted via accounts and groups, not mailboxes and Exchange distribution lists. If you want a user to send with a folder's address, the folder must not be hidden.

Once the user has Send As permission, they can use View | From Field in Outlook to display the From box and either click From to choose from the Address Book or type in the name of the public folder or other mailbox. If the public folder is hidden from the GAL, the user should go to the folder's Properties page and add the folder's address to their own address book.

Active Folders Exchange Server folder and mailbox management tool suite including policy management, server-based compression, permissions management, audit trail and reporting. Can sweep all user mail folders -- including those in Personal Folders .pst files -- to locate particular attachments or messages meeting other criteria.
ERSA "Exchange Security Risk Auditor" to audit and change mailbox permissions both for periodic security audits and for common events, such as an employee leaving the company.
Exchange Permission Manager Assign permissions on multiple Exchange public folders and system folders and users can modify mailbox permissions in addition to public folder permissions, company-wide. It works with Exchange 5.5, 2000 and 2003; and, for reporting, you can print out current permissions on single or groups of folders. Version 2.
Folder Permissions Manager Symprex Folder Permissions Manager allows administrators to centrally manage all permissions on mailbox folders and public folders on Exchange 5.5, 2000 and 2003. Folder permissions can be listed and changed manually, or using templates with permissions settings created using the built-in wizard. Permissions can be applied to any number of mailboxes and folders at the click of a button.
OWA Permissions Control Web application for viewing and modifying folder permissions. Combines features of the company's former OWA Delegate Control and OWA Public Folder Control. (5 Mar)

Public Folder Utility View folder permissions and other properties. Export folder properties and permissions to a text file or relational database for analysis. Send customized messages to folder owners. Manage orphaned public folder client permissions.
SetPerm Allows you to set default permissions on individual folders within mailboxes throughout your organization or on groups of mailboxes. Free.

    Set All Calendars to Reviewer

Many organizations want people to not only see each other's free/busy times but also get appointment details. Therefore, they want to enforce a policy of using Reviewer as the default permission on each user's Calendar folder. This is not a capability built into Outlook, but you can perform this task with some of the tools above.

If you want to experiment, you could also create a custom application using CDO and the ACL Component from the Platform SDK to manage permissions; a version of Acl.dll compiled for Windows NT/2000 is available from Microsoft's FTP site (this site is not always responsive). If you need a Windows 95/98 version, you'll have to compile the C++ source yourself. More information:

  • Sue Mosher's pre-conference Workshop from Microsoft Exchange Conference 99 -- The PowerPoint presentation for Segment 5 (324kb) includes details on the ACL model. The source code (473kb) includes a sample Outlook 2000 VBA project that runs on Windows NT only.

  • Connecting Microsoft Exchange Server to a POP3 Account

Downloading mail from a POP account into Exchange Server in general is not a supported configuration (though you wouldn't know it from the proliferation of tools to accomplish this). However, Microsoft does provide an Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes for Small Business Server, having licensed Internet Mailbridge from Acotec. It's still not a supported configuration for full Exchange Server.

I'd suggest that you read about both sides of this issue. If you decide to try this route, there are plenty of tools to choose from. Features common to all POP3 collectors include the ability to POP mail from multiple servers and from multiple mailboxes. You'll also be able to control how often it checks for new mail in the POP3 accounts and limit it to downloading new mail during specific hours, such as only during business hours. All of the commercial POP3 connectors should be able to deliver mail to any SMTP address, including mail-enabled Public Folders.

Many of these tools support these forms of POP3 collection:

  • One-to-one, which collects mail from a single POP3 mailbox and sends it to a specific SMTP address
  • Many-to-one, which collects mail from multiple POP3 mailboxes and sends it to single SMTP address
  • One-to-many, which collects mail from single 'catch-all' POP3 mailbox and sends it to multiple SMTP addresses
  • Note that the one-to-many collection method fails when messages are BCC'd to users.

How can I modify Group Policy's refresh interval?

    A. By default, Group Policy refreshes every 90 minutes for typical machines and users and every 5 minutes for domain controllers (DCs). To change these intervals, perform the following steps:

    1. Open the relevant Group Policy Object (GPO). For example, open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, right-click the organizational unit (OU) or domain, select Properties, select the Group Policy tab, select the GPO, then click Edit.
    2. Expand Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Group Policy.
    3. Double-click "Group Policy refresh interval for computers," then select Enabled. Enter the new refresh rate and the maximum random time to wait for the refresh (to avoid all machines updating at the same time), then click OK.
    4. If required, double-click "Group Policy refresh interval for domain controllers," then select Enabled. Enter the new refresh rate, which should be significantly less than the average computer policy refresh rate, and the maximum random time to wait for the refresh (to avoid all machines updating at the same time), then click OK.

    5. Expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Group Policy.
    6. Double-click "Group Policy refresh interval for users."
    7. Again, select Enabled, set the necessary values, then click OK.
    8. Close the Group Policy Editor (GPE).

You don't have to configure both the user and computer value--you can modify just one of them. You shouldn't set these values too low: Every update requires processing and adds to the network traffic, and short refresh rates can quickly cause larger network problems. For example, setting the update frequency to 0 would result in Group Policy attempting a refresh every 7 seconds, which probably isn't good for anyone.

How can I force Group Policy to refresh on a Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP machine?

    A. To manually force Group Policy to refresh under Windows 2000, you use the command

    secedit /refreshpolicy

Microsoft has replaced this command in Windows 2003 and XP with this command:

    gpupdate

You can run this command without any switches to update both machine and user policies. When you run Gpupdate on Windows 2003, the machine will display the following:

Refreshing Policy... User Policy Refresh has completed.
Computer Policy Refresh has completed. To check for errors in policy processing, review the event log.

The last line doesn't appear on XP machines. To update only the user command components, type

    gpupdate /target:user

To load only the computer command components, type

    gpupdate /target:computer

The optional switches that you can use with the Gpupdate command are

    • /Force. This switch loads all policy settings rather than just those that have changed.
    • /Wait:
    • /Logoff. This switch causes the user to log off after Group Policy refreshes.
    • /Boot. This switch causes a reboot after Group Policy refreshes.
    • /Sync. This switch synchronously (i.e., in the background) applies the next boot or user logon policy (the system will prompt you to log off or reboot, depending on the /target setting).

How do I force Windows XP Local Group Policy to update?

In windows 2000, you could use Secedit /refreshpolicy to force Group Policy to update, without waiting for the default update interval.

Windows XP provides Gpupdate for the same purpose. The syntax is:

    GPUpdate [/Target:{Computer | User}] [/Force] [/Wait:value ] [/Logoff] [/Boot]

    where:

[/Target:{Computer | User}] If the switch is omitted, both Computer and User policy settings are updated.
[/Force] Causes all policy settings to be reapplied, not just the changed settings.
[/Wait:nnn] If you omit this switch, the maximum wait time to complete the processing, and proceed to the next command, is 600 seconds. A nnn of 0 eliminates any wait, while an nnn of -1 will wait until policy processing is finished. If the wait time is exceeded, the next command is processed, but policy processing continues in the background.
[/Logoff] This switch will log you off when policy processing finishes. It should be used if you apply a policy that is only applied during logon, like Folder Redirection. If no such policy was applied, the switch is ignored.
[/Boot] This switch will restart the computer, if you apply a policy that can only be applied during startup, like computer-targeted Software Installation. If no such policy was applied, the switch is ignored.

    Windows 2000 Group Policy refresh.

Windows 2000 Domain Controllers refresh to other Windows 2000 Domain Controllers on 5 minute intervals. Non-DC Windows 2000 computers are refreshed every 90 minutes.

If many WIndows 2000 computers requested a refresh at the same time, significant congestion would occur. To avoid this, a random offset interval is added to the refresh interval, to calclate the the refresh cycle. Windows 2000 domain controllers use a 0 minute offset, while non-DC Windows 2000 computers use 30 minutes. The refresh information for user and computer policies are maintained separately.

You can use the Group Policy to change these settings, or you can use the registry:

To change the refresh interval for computers:
    Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
    Value Name: GroupPolicyRefreshTime
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
Range (in minutes): 0 to 64800

To change the offset interval for computers:
    Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
    Value Name: GroupPolicyRefreshTimeOffset
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
Range (in minutes): 0 to 1440

To change the refresh interval for domain controllers:
    Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
    Value Name: GroupPolicyRefreshTimeDC
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
Range (in minutes): 0 to 64800

To change the offset interval for domain controllers:
    Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
    Value Name: GroupPolicyRefreshTimeOffsetDC
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
Range (in minutes): 0 to 1440

To change the refresh interval for users:
    Registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
    Value Name: GroupPolicyRefreshTime
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
Range (in minutes): 0 to 64800

To change the offset interval for users:
    Registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
    Value Name: GroupPolicyRefreshTimeOffset
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
Range (in minutes): 0 to 1440
To immediately impose GPO settings upon a target workstation:

    Computer:

    SECEDIT /REFRESHPOLICY MACHINE_POLICY /ENFORCE

    User:

    SECEDIT /REFRESHPOLICY USER_POLICY /ENFORCE
